Wood

Making me very happy today….this pile of apple tree trimmings…..earlier this week I spied them out of my bedroom window and knowing my neighbour has a shredder knew the fate that beheld them….I intervened saving him the trouble and effort…over the fence they came and now into our garage to season and be ‘processed’ by the man of the house.

Which brings me onto the subject of being proactive and keeping your eyes peeled for gardening activity that may produce a by product unwanted by one but valued by another. I am not normally forward by find it easy when I know what I want is probably destined for landfill.

Last year a neighbour who has sadly passed away came to me enquiring if I wanted his apple wood trimmings…..he knew we had a wood burner and even knew what time I lit it as he could smell the wood smoke… after spending a year in our garage it was a dream to burn.

Even had some beautiful lichens attached.

  1. As you know last spring I acquired a mountain of ready cut logs for £20 which are still going strong making the cost of each log fire this winter next to nothing - and all because I asked. There are so many things like this that people just don't use anymore because they don't have fires/stoves or whatever. It is good to do things an older gentler way :-)

  2. Oooo nice thrifting there! you cant beat a nice bit of wood!
Huppy P 'sourced' some today but it was boring old wood planks and whatnot from a building site - not as pretty and no doubt fragrant as your twigs.

  3. It is always a good idea to ask. It is far better that something is used, than go to landfill.

Apple does smell lovely when burnt on the fire. I know that Ash is supposed to be the best but I love to burn apple.......

The lichen is beautiful and shows that the air is very clean where you live. It does not grow well if there is pollution.

  4. Cheryl - yes the air is very good where I am...right by the sea.
I have also thought my previous apple burnt better than ash too.

  6. Well done and old Chinese proverb I read years ago " He who asks is a fool for 5 minutes, he who never asks is a fool for a life time" very wise words when you think about it.

It never hurts to ask specially if it can be put to good use. At least you will be warm and toasty next winter.

  8. I spent an evening at a friend's house last week. She had a wood burner, and it was just so lovely to sit there, watching the flames, and chatting about the world. Good for you for nabbing something that others are going to destroy. More power to your elbow. x
