Face Value

I have noticed in recent years there seems no women on TV that haven't succumbed to Botox and/or fillers. I know it’s all about personal choice and I’d be the last person to say they shouldn’t do it but I find it sad – no tragic that women aren’t able to look their age.
In the last hundred years we have come a long way – we can vote, be in control of our own fertility, work, be paid equally; but now it seems we have to look perpetually 35 or we aren’t seem as attractive or allowed on TV on a regular basis.
I was 46 on Thursday. I am lucky that I have a pretty face and because I have never smoked or been a sun worshiper am quite well preserved but I won’t be going down the Botox/filler route. I have treated myself to some Estee Lauder SPF15 face cream for the summer months but that is it.
If I had the money to afford such treatments I think I would much rather spend it on having experiences that might broaden my mind and make me a more interesting person.
Will it take another hundred years for women to be truly equal to men and be able to age naturally and be valued for who they are and not by how they look?

  1. A belated happy birthday from one Taurean to another.

Is it just a 'woman' thing though? Or are men having Botox too? I wonder if it's just a 'modern age' thing whereby everyone wants to look youthful - hasn't Cliff Richard had a facelift? I'm sure he's not the only one either. The technology and skill is there to rearrange our bodies, so some people use it.

I'm with you though - I don't think I could do it, and just think what else that sort of money could buy?!

  2. I recently watched an interview with the actress Shelia Hancock, I think she said she was 74... but what a great woman!! & role model, she looked both fantastic as well as an interesting person to share your company with....
Another favorite of mine is Judy Dench...not only a great actress, but she embraces her age & curvy size.
As for Lulu recent face life... well, that speaks for it's self doesn't it.....!?

  3. I don't think women in the UK are as equal as we'd like to think. Equal pay? We may have rights to it, but I don't think it's a reality. How many men are there in minimum wage, part-time jobs? How many women are there in so called 'top-jobs' or management? It's not that we don't have the ability to do these jobs, but we don't have the opportunity - unless (on a lot of levels) we're prepared to behave like men...

Perhaps if you're an 'ageing' actress (where roles are supposed to be few and far between), maybe you feel that you have to compete for roles written for younger women, and maybe that leads you to believe that you have to take such drastic measures. How bizarre is it though, when you feel you even have to Photoshop your personal photos re Liz Hurley?

I completely agree with you, it would be far better to spend the thousands of pounds on enriching life experiences - but people like this can probably afford to do both. Society has a lot to answer for!

    Hear hear!!
And I feel it's really, really sad that we are such an ageist society.
I find it very easy not to get caught up in all the TV /Hollywood hype stuff. It's all very disheartening and it's sends so many wrong messages.

  5. Good post. It must be a slippery slope if you start out on the facelift route. I mean would you want to look like Joan Rivers or Cher when you reach their age, there is something spooky about them both. Fortunately as Primchick says there are some good role models who are happy interesting women in in their perfectly natural bodies.

  9. So not a fan of the Jocelyn wildenstein look I guess? I find their mouths look so odd when they've been filled and botoxed..almost like they've forgotten how to talk why would you want to look like that? Lesley Ash's experience would be enough to put me off.

Anyway,Happy (late) birthday 46 year old lady, hope it was a nice one x

  10. There are a lot of Taureans in the blogs I read! Hmmm - stubborn, greedy, home loving, blunt, loyal - I can say this as I am a fellow bull. Happy belated birthday Lynn.
I am physically repelled by face-lifted, botoxed men and expect that many men are equally repelled by expressionless women.
Personally I find that carrying a stone or so of extra padding gets rid of wrinkles very well :)

  11. Ive just found your blog (through the lovely Pebbledash) and Ive really enjoyed looking at your pics and reading your posts - this one though; I heartily agree with you in every sense! I find it a shame that some women can't embrace their natural beauty and shine from within...

    Makes you think

    Sending love
