Making Breakfast

Every time I popped a box of muesli into my shopping trolley I thought I was paying an awful lot of money for what is essentially, oats and dried fruit and nuts, so here is my first attempts at making my own; even if I say so I am very pleased with the outcome

I don’t know about you, but whenever I eat shop bought muesli there is always an ingredient that I pick out - flaked banana, rancid Brazil nuts; the flake to fruit to nut ratio is never quite to my taste.

It is very approximate, I used my cup measures so I have a rough idea of the cereal/fruit/nut ratio but other than that just put into the mix what you like to eat – it’s as simple as that!

I would imagine children would like doing this because it’s fun and to a certain extent they could choose certain things that went into their own family blend of breakfast cereal.

So here is Gigibird’s Breakfast Blend to get you started on the road to Muesli adventures
1 cup porridge oats
1 cup spelt flakes
1/3 cup raisins
¼ cup toasted flaked almonds
¼ cup sultanas

I serve mine with some Vogel’s soya and linseed bran cereal mixed through and soya milk – you could also add a small amount of whatever children like eating but shouldn't’t – cocoa pops, frosties etc to break them in gently.

  1. Healthy, girl! My kids would look at muesli and go "OOh! Rabbit food!" but I love it.

  2. Thank you for the recipe! I'll bet my kids just may eat their breakfast in the morning if they help dictate what goes into it! we are having a hard time locating spelt... I think I may have to jump online and find a source. My mother has asked us for spelt, too, which we don't carry in the shop.

  3. Mmmm, I love muesli. You're right, I usually take out the bananna chips also I don't like alot of raisins. I make my own granola - it's so easy to make and tastes better than store bought.

  5. I should try your muesli recipe, I love it but have never made my own. It makes sense to know what is going into it.
